Right now Houston is underwater, and Hurricane Harvey has gone back out into the Gulf of Mexico to strengthen and hit Houston a second time.
Our government's ability to respond to this disaster has been weakened due to the outright denial of climate change, the promotion of 'fake news' as a way to ignore facts, and the refusal to mandate an evacuation.
It is time we fight back against the head in the sand mentality and finally admit that, climate change is here and is strengthening the Hurricanes that hit our coastlines. This supposed a once in Five Hundred Year storm is something we've heard before.
We Texans need to answer the call to help our fellow citizens who have been displaced.
If you are in North Texas, please follow Dallas City Hall or Mayor Rawlings, both of whom will have updates regarding the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center shelter.
Unfortunately, we are not in clean up stage as the storm is returning and flood waters are still rising for Texans. Here's how you can best support our fellow Texans:
-Donate to Food Banks
-Donate to local organizations on the ground right now
-Donate to the SPCA of Texas or the Humane Society
-Open your home to friends, friends of friends who need it.
And as this crisis continues to unfold, I cannot in good conscience turn a blind eye to the additional risk that Trump is putting onto our First Responders by slowing down the evacuation by having checkpoints for immigration status, nor can I ignore the hypocrisy of Republicans like Pete Sessions who voted against funding disaster relief in 2012 for Hurricane Sandy.
We need compassionate leaders in Congress who won't play politics with climate change. That's why I'm asking for your help to spread the message for my candidacy, either by volunteering or donating.
